Ben Fogle explores The Azores
Ben Fogle is no stranger to adventure. He’s not yet 40, but already he has sprinted across the Sahara, raced by foot across Antarctica to the South Pole and rowed across the Atlantic. And he’s just become an ambassador to a group of islands in that ocean – The Azores.
The Azores have been selected as one of the World Top 10 Trips for this Summer by National Geographic Traveller. But what can you expect when you get there?
Ben tells you more:

Hugo Ferreira (Azores) cooking with celebrity Chef Ming Tsai!
Ming Tsai's popular cooking program, "Simply Ming," is in its 10th season on public television. While his inventive approach to "East Meets West" cooking and genial personality are reasons enough to tune in, SouthCoast viewers have an extra motivation this season: Five of the season's 26 episodes feature the food and culture of the Azores.
When we spoke Jan. 15, he was anticipating an Azores promotional event last Thursday at his Wellesley restaurant, Blue Ginger, involving SATA, the airline that helped sponsor his trip, tourism officials, and WGBH.
Hugo Ferreira, a chef and instructor at the School for Tourism and Hospitality in Ponta Delgada, Saint Michael, who is featured in one of the five Azores episodes, was to be in attendance.
Tsai explained how he started hitting the road to film segments of his show, rather than sticking to home base (the demonstration kitchen at Clarke Corp. in Milford, a supplier of high-end appliances).
After the economy went sour in 2008, "we started thinking of other ways of raising money, and tourism agencies started to call," which led to visits to Hong Kong, Singapore, and now, the Azores. "To be honest, it makes for great television," Tsai said, providing a chance to explore the food, culture and people. His audience of 1 million viewers a week across the United States provides great exposure for tourist boards, he said.
Before planning the shoot, Tsai said, "I knew the Azores was somewhere in the Atlantic," but there his knowledge ended. Now that he's visited, he's greatly impressed with this destination "just a four-hour flight from Boston."
"We were there for six days" for the September taping, and the Azorean tourism agency made the arrangements.
The Azoreans he met were "so friendly, so welcoming, and so wanted to show off their food and their culture," he said. All article:

The Azores is on Fodor’s 2013 Go List along with 24 other destinations all over the world
The reason WHY THE AZORES is on FODOR´S 2013 Go List
Fodor’s considers the Azores ‘A lush island paradise in Portugal just waiting to be discovered’. The sentence may summarize the reasons for the election, however Fodor’s goes on with the compliments.
Margaret Kelly, Fodor’s journalist signing the article, describes the Azores as a ‘lush, volcanic archipelago’ famed for ‘world-class whale watching, hot mineral springs, and quaint seaside towns’. For her ‘each of the nine islands that make up the Azores Islands has its own fascinating identity’.
The Azores is on Fodor’s 2013 Go List also due to economic reasons. After all, ‘it’s almost impossible find an expensive restaurant on any of the islands.’ After considering the lodging options ‘cozy’, Margaret Kelly surrenders to the Azorean gastronomy, stating without a doubt that ‘seafood is outstanding’.
The journalist considers the Azores location ‘in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about mid-way between the New York and Lisbon’ as ‘slightly inconvenient’. However is ‘thanks to the Portuguese territory’s off-the-beaten-path locale, prices are well within budget.”
When it comes to lodging options, Fodor’s mentions Furnas Lake Villas in São Miguel and Adegas do Pico. Yet, there are other great hotels both in São Miguel as in Pico island.
Although the Azorean beaches aren’t the archipelago’s main highlight, Margaret Kelly advises readers that they should go for a swim because ‘the Gulf Stream keeps the water a temperate 70 degrees—perfect for a dip’.

Hugo Ferreira (Azores) with celebrity chef/restaurateur Ming Tsai, USA!
`Focusing on modern Azorean cuisine, Tsai shared his take on how he would use local ingredients as he cooked along with Chef Hugo Ferreira. Tsai made a tea-smoked hamachi (a fish also known as amberjack) with a corn salsa, accented with pime
nta de terra, a salty, spicy red pepper condiment used in Portuguese cuisine. “I fell in love with that — I started using it everywhere,” he said. Ferreira, whom Tsai described as a really talented and innovative chef, pan-seared the fish and served it alongside a saffron risotto cake`
